Dear Fellow Leader,
Where are you thinking from? No offense to William Shakespeare but this is the question. Our beliefs are driving our behavior. Most of the things we think and do are based upon beliefs that can run so deep in us, we don't even realize they are there. And if we don't realize they are there, how can we ever determine if they're serving or keeping us in a rut of mediocrity?
We are all working hard to better our lives, but how often do we really look at the cause of our results? No, I'm not referring to the economy, our boss or employees, our lack of education, what party controls the political process, or any other condition or circumstance. James Allen wrote, "Men are anxious to improve their circumstances but unwilling to improve themselves, therefore they remain bound." Rooted in the Law of Cause and Effect., he is saying that unless we address the cause, the effect will remain the same. The only way to improve our results is through modifying our belief system. Any improvement made without modifying the belief that's creating it will be short lived.
So who is the Conscious Leader? They are the men and women who become observers of their thoughts, beliefs and habits, which enables them to become aware of the ones that are moving them forward and the ones that are limiting their results. They are the ones who live at the cause end and consciously create every result in life. Without this awareness, we become unconscious spectators instead of the conscious architects of our life.
This is not a message for every leader. This means getting out of our comfort zone and into our growth zone in order to take a conscious look beyond our results. My friend and mentor John Maxwell says, "When I want to be motivated I go to an event. When I want to grow, I engage in a process." So if you're looking for that "magic" pill, this isn't the place for you, I assure you.
Why should you care? Statistics show that 72-93% of the average person's day is spent on auto-pilot. They are doing the things they've always been doing without thinking about the action. This means they are unconscious to the process. When a person isn't fully present, the belief system is generating the thoughts and behaviors that are creating the results.
If you're still with me, it tells me that you're the type of person who's serious about closing the biggest gap in life. The gap between what we know and what we do. And a major key to closing that gap is to become more self-aware.
